Winter Retreat 2011 "Be Bold"

You don't want to miss out on this years 4 day OVERFLOW JH Winter Retreat "Be BOLD".  The JH youth group will be staying in a big cabin located on the ski slopes of Snow Summit.  We will be having a great guest speaker, Jason Griffice from Saint Andrew, speaking to us about the importance of BEING BOLD in our faith.  Please read below for exact details, but SIGN UP!!!

Ministry: Jr High

Location: Big Bear Lake CA (Snow Summit)

Cost:  $275.00

Housing Details:

This year's retreat will be held in Big Bear Lake. We will be staying in one huge home (Bear Ski In Ski Out) that will fit the entire crew. The girls will be sleeping on the first floor of the house and the boys will be on the second floor.  Each group will have leaders in their rooms with them.  Students will need to bring sleeping bags and pillows since some may be sleeping on the floor and couches.  The house is located directly on the ski slopes in big bear where students can ski in and out during the day.  We will use the house for group gatherings each morning and night, all meals, sleeping, and to just hang out.

Pricing Specifics:

The price listed on the website does not include the price of lift tickets or snowboard rentals, but you'll have the option to add rental equipment, food vouchers, and lift tickets to your price when you register.  If you rent or buy lift tickets through our group you will receive a discount because we buy in bulk, but you don't have to buy or rent through us.  The price listed on our website $275 includes lodging, all meals, transportation, and all misc. expenses.  Students do not have to ski or snowboard if they don't want to, which is why we do the base price without lift tickets, lessons, or equipment included.  Please read below to learn more about equipment rental, lessons, and other options students can participate in besides skiing and snowboarding.  They also can just ski one day if they don't want to ski or snowboard two days.  Please download the pricing guide from this webpage for specific prices.

In regards to funding the trip, we require each family to at least try and pay the deposit.  If you read below in the Funding Your Trip section you can learn about different ways to raise money and get your trip paid for.  We hold true that finances should never be the main reason a student can come to camp.  We have the resources and creativity available to make sure a lack of finances is not the reason why a student can't get to camp.  If the scholarship, fundraising, and work program, listed below, is not enough please call and let me, Chad Merrihew, know so I can help.

Equipment Rentals:

This year we are requiring all students who will be renting equipment to do so at Snow Summit.  The pricing is the same as if you were to rent locally and it gives us less equipment we have to hall up to the resort.  If you plan on renting please fill ou the rental form attached to this webpage and submit it to the youth offices.  Many times you can find friends or family who will loan out equipment, so that's always an optoin too if you don't own equipment.

Ski or Snowboard Lessons:

If a student doesn't know how to ski or snowboard they can register for a lesson through Snow Summit or have one of the adult leaders teach them.  For the past two seasons I, and a variety of other talented volunteers, have been teaching students how to snowboard and ski.  Students can do either of the two options, but if they're realy serious about learning a private or group lesson through snow summit is typically the faster or more efficient option.

Activity Options Beside Skiing:

Students who don't want to ski or snowboard for whatever reason do not have to.  Many students just enjoy hanging out at the cabin and spending time with the group.  We will have a group going sledding on Saturday and another group will go bowling on Sunday.  We will also bring up sleds and plenty of games and PG rated movies for those who want to just relax at the house.

Chaperone's & Leaders:

OVERFLOW will be bring up 4 male leaders and 5 female leaders.  My mother, Jenny, will be coming up with her husband Bill for the second year in a row now to do all the cooking, cleaning, and other fun home tasks.  Bill and Jenny will not be skiing and will always be at the Cabin in case students want to come in early from the slopes.  The other volunteer leaders will all be on the mountain with the students during the day so that every group of students has a leader with them.

Departure Details:

Due to crazy 91 freeway traffic on Friday's we will be meeting at Grace Fellowhsip Church on Friday at 12PM sharpe in order to miss traffic and get up to the mountain before dark.  Please come with all equipment, unless you're renting, all signed waivers, all luggage, and of course yourself.

Guest Speaker & Theme:

Jason is the husband of Malia and the father of Ezekiel (5) and Elsie (1). He loves Jesus, music and donuts.  He has an MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary and has been involved in Youth Ministry Leadership since 1992.  He has been a Youth Director, College Director, and is currently Director of Community Outreach at St. Andrew's Presbyterian.

Funding Your Trip...

If a student is interested in raising money there are three options available.

Option 1: Scholarships  Families can fill out a scholarship application and turn it into Pastor Chad Merrihew.  All scholarship applications are kept confidential.  Each year the JH Group sets aside a certain amount of money for scholarships for each event and will distrubute those funds accordingly.  Students can receive up to 50% of their trip by filling out a scholarship application. All scholarship applications are due no later than January 26th.

Option 2: Work Program  Students can earn up to $40 towards their trip by participating in the Work Program.  This program allows students to work for friends, family, or the church at $8 an hour, which will go as a credit to their account.  Please dowload a Work Program form online or pick one up in the JH room.  These work program forms are due Feburary 2nd.

Option 3: Fundraisers  Each year we have 3 fundraisers specifically for Winter Retreat.  This year we already hosted a brunch Sunday, which we raised $400 at, and will also be raising funds through a Rubio's Mexican Grill fundraiser on Sunday January 16th and a Claim Jumper Fundraiser on Sunday January 30th.  All funds raised through fundraisign get divided equally among all participants.  If you choose to opt. out and give your fundraising money back for other students to receive please email and let us know.

ATTENTION PARENTS - Please make sure to print out all forms attached and return any forms that are relevant to you and your family.  All students must at least fill out and return all waivers.
